(apologies on one of my worst photoshops ever)
So, its your standard ; you can take 1 modern (1980+) car back to the past. The rules:
The year is 1955
You can choose anywhere in America to live
You are allowed to bring an OBDII reader, a selection of hand tools specific to your car (but no electronic tools) and 1 additional set of modern tires.
You must complete 10,000 miles before you can come back to the present.
The last rule is to throw a little kink into the "la Ferrari/P1/918" issue where its tempting to bring back a hyper car for the luls because the truth is that cars like these would have a hard time doing 10,000 miles without modern fuels and infrastructure.
I'm going to make assumptions that you can buy sufficient quality motor oil for the 2-3 changes required.
Also, I am going to assume that no scientist of businessman will be trying to kill you to get your car, but that you are welcome to show it to them under the assumption that ...blah blah blah timeline of history.
Now leaded gas will be an issue, but for 10,000 miles you should be okay, though direct injection engines might throw a fit. worst case scenario you just do a cat delete and live with the code.
So now the fun part....what do you take? Something rugged and subtle like a truck? Something crazy fast (for the time) but ordinary like a v6 midsized sedan? Something with insain power like a vette?
Me, I like to troll people a little, so I would definitely be bringing something Japanese or German
Maybe a Mark IV supra turbo...nah too obvious
The FR-S in the lead pic is temping, faster than most, tiny, Japanese...
I could take the cruiser, it has enough computers to blow peoples minds but should be reliable enough to see the west that hasn't been modernized and popularized yet.
Tough call.

Corvette ZR-1. If the engine breaks down, I'll drop a Chevy 350 in it.

Nope, biggest they had back in 55 was a 302.

Hellcat, because america.
And I'll make sure to pass in front of the original Challenger designer's house (he was probably a kid then) to inspire him, thus completing the loop.
Just one extra set of tire, you said? so 5 000 miles on a set? that will be hard.

You could easily go 10,000 miles in a modern car without changing the oil even once. It may not be the factory recommended schedule, but it's more than doable.

yeah, thats the gotcha was cars like the hellcat. Good choice though, I wonder how a supercharged engine would run on 55 era gas though...hmmm.

I have only 2 fears
1.) GM might implode trying to comprehend it
2.) I really, really don't want to spend 10,000 miles in 1955.

It would look like a god damn space ship
and go just about as fast

Leaded gas is going to fuck your car up.

well since your cut off year is 1980, I would take either a 81 Z28 Camaro or 81 Corvette. Mainly because they are still carberated plus small block Chevys go 10.000 miles without skipping a beat.
I don't think that gas would cause issues. I think it would actually make the injected cars run better.

I take that back. A first gen 900. because watching 50s people try to figure out why a car that looks like that and is made by an airplane company doesn't fly would be hilarious.

Some sort of quasi-military truck like a Humvee or the Marauder. Gets rid of the fuel issue and gives off a don't fuck with me image.
If those are disallowed I'd take something with an old digital dash like a Trofeo because those still feel more weirdly futuristic than modern car computers.
Oh, and I'd go to St. Louis so I could choose whether to venture west to the more uninhabited regions or NE to the cities depending on how the 'time-locals' received my temporal invasion.

MKII Supra. Chunky 80s design and pop-up headlights.
Should be an Australian model, because those can take leaded fuel.

Tough call, I think I'd go with the P1. I'd put my trust in Mclaren engineering. But if even if doesn't last it will still show the world what to aim for in 1955 and there fore get a head start on developing things. Like carbon fiber, turbos, hybrid/battery and it looks futuristic too.

Alternative Answer: Model S
The fancy-smancy internet connectivity features would be kaput, but you could presumably find a place to plug it in.

I love this idea a lot. How cheap was electricity in 1955? and it was the same phase and polarity so its not like it wouldn't work. doing 10,000 miles might take a while on 110 charging though. I think I would make sure to load the HD down with all sorts of good stuff to mess with peoples heads. This might be my pick. You're totally screwed if it breaks down at all though.

what a fun game!
I think, as others have noted, available gas supply, and as you mentioned available oil supply would mean you'd want something fairly rugged.
http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/jet-fuel-in-th
might have a little trouble hitting 88 mph though...
Also, I think I'd want something that DIDNT make me look like invading russians (or whoever the bad guys in 1955 were)

I don't think so. The battery won't fail before 10,000 miles, and electrical engineering what definitely a thing in 1955. You might have to make some messy repairs, but you could definitely make it work.

I;ve been trying to do research on what would happen. my working theories are:
cats would be toast after 10,000 miles
EGR might be toast after 10,000 miles
Direct injection injectors might be toast sooner
ECU with lots of sophistication might flip the hell out.
Other than that its anyone's guess. Take the risk and bring something cool but modern? play it safe and bring something old school?
Also, Leaded gas wasn't fully phased out in the us until 1993, so there is a good chance that pre OBDII cars would take it just fine.

2015 S60 Drive-E T6
Place: Detroit. Beating almost all the muscle cars on street drags and get killer MPG's. I would need VIDA (Volvo's scan tool) to do some overhauling fuel trims and adapting for the leaded fuel. The main purpose mostly would be to have America dominate the car markets of the 80's and 90's so that Japan and Europe wouldn't. That was a tough era for American cars and when the crap reputation/import dominance began. This would show them about small engines, quality, driving dynamics, power, and efficiency. All to hopefully prevent that 80's and 90's era of bad American cars (mostly 4 door) from happening. Some of those cars were heroes I know, but not globally known like the bullet proof Camry type and dynamic E30's and such of the time. Who knows what Murica would make. Cadillac would be like Mercedes? The Ford umbrella would be like VW?

I'll bring my AW11. Cat's already gone, so it won't get clogged, EGR's been removed, so that won't get clogged, and it has pop up headlights.

Probably not long, but if it lasts more than 10K miles, I'd be okay.
Still, premium fuel in the 50's was around 94 octane, so with a cat delete, it should run without too much issues.

time travel people! Why are we talking petrol? Snag a turbo diesel ram, run it on anything you can get your hands on, and clear 10,000 no problem. Hell you could even run a little hauling business while you're back there, towing way more than any mid 50's engine could
